UTC’s British Values Statement
At South Devon UTC, we are committed to fostering a learning environment that upholds the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Our specialisms in Engineering and Health provide unique opportunities for students aged 14-19 to develop these values through practical and academic experiences.
Democracy
We encourage active participation in decision-making processes, ensuring that every student’s voice is heard. Our student council and regular feedback sessions empower students to contribute to the development of our UTC. For example:
- Student Leaders attend the LGB meetings each half term so that their voice is heard
- Attendance to the Trust wide Student Leadership conference
- KS4 and 5 Student Leaders feedback to their peers, tutors and SLT
- Student panels for all interviews
- Students meet with MPs and other local / national decision makers.
The Rule of Law
Understanding and respecting the laws that govern our society is integral to our curriculum. We instil a sense of responsibility and accountability in our students, preparing them to be conscientious citizens and professionals. For example:
- The UTC has a clear behaviour policy through its code of employability
- The code of employability practices how rules are in place and are required in protecting all stakeholders
- The development of a shared responsibility around health and safety is actively taught.
Individual Liberty
We promote a culture of freedom and self-expression, allowing students to explore their interests and talents. Our supportive environment ensures that students can make informed choices about their education and future careers.
Mutual Respect
Respect for oneself and others is a cornerstone of our community. We teach students the importance of empathy, collaboration, and ethical behaviour, essential qualities for success in both Engineering and Health sectors.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Our diverse community celebrates and respects differences. We provide opportunities for students to learn about and appreciate various cultures and perspectives, fostering a sen.se of unity and inclusion.
